New Arrivals
White
Quattro Mani Toh-Kai
Slovenia 2008 $10.99
Made by the Movia winery in Slovenia, just across the border
of northeast Italy’s Friuli province—an area known for excellent white
wine—this Tocai boasts a provocative nose redolent of peach and green apple and
follows up with a sleek, mineral-edged palate that recalls stone fruits, pear,
and ripe melon. An undertone of mint pervades the dry, surprisingly persistent
finish, where the peach and apple flavors linger pleasantly. This wine
represents excellent value and will pair well with full flavored seafood or
white meat dishes.

Zolo Sauvignon Blanc
Mendoza Argentina 2009 $12.99
This impressive Sauvignon offers pungent cut grass and
herbal aromas along with distinct but understated notes of grapefruit and
tangerine. The assertive palate abounds with flavors of citrus, melon and fresh
herbs, with a hint of pepper keeping things lively. Juicy yet precise, the wine
finishes dry, with plenty of succulent fruit balanced by crisp acidity. An
excellent example of classic varietal character, this Sauvignon will match well
with goat cheese, grilled shrimp and stuffed peppers.

Selbach-Oster Zeltinger
Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken Germany 2007 $17.99
“…smells of peach,
red raspberry, herbs, and sea breeze. Bright and refreshing, this is anything
but heavy, yet possesses a palpable sense of extract. Smoky, toasted nut
suggestions emerge on airing. The residual sugar here is not directly in
evidence, but its absence would have made for a more austere and less
delightful wine…will prove highly versatile at table over the next 6-8 years,
if not longer.”

Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler
Badstube Riesling Spätlese Germany 2007 $24.99
“…offers typical
cherry and lime, beneath a thin veil of yeasty, fermentative notes. This boasts
an amazing combination of lithe, vivacious citrus and berry fruit with imposing
creaminess of texture. Hints of cherry pit and wet stone add a pleasantly
bitter and mineral nip to a refined, delicate finish. This will remain
seductive for 15-20 years.”

Fog Dog Chardonnay Sonoma Coast California 2007
$26.99
“Exhibits a complex, tangy mix of lemon-lime, citrus and
green apple flavors that are full-bodied and intense, yet elegant, ending with a
cleansing finish. Drink now through 2016.”

This fruit forward rosé blends Tempranillo and Cabernet

pair well with spicy seafood or pork dishes.

Ampakama Syrah Rosé San Juan Argentina 2008 $11.99
This terrific rosé of Syrah offers plenty of dark fruit and
spice on the nose and follows up with a full bodied palate, where the succulent
fruit takes on a deep, savory quality with earthy undertones. Although
delightfully juicy, with ripe plum and cherry notes, the wine finishes firm and
dry, echoing lovely spice and mineral notes. This will make an excellent
partner for grilled salmon or pork, spicy gumbo or baked ham.

Sicily Italy 2007 $14.99
This full-bodied Sicilian red boasts an inviting nose of
rich dark plum and berry fruit, followed by a well structured palate with
beautifully layered plum, blueberry, and ripe cherry flavors. Tangy red berry

Fog Dog Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast California
2007
$26.99
“Offers a vivid array
of blackberry, raspberry and black cherry fruit that's intense, ripe and rich
without being heavy. Full-bodied, but light and delicate, gaining finesse and
ending with a long finish of berry fruit. Drink now through 2016.”

Bois de Boursan Chateauneuf-du-Pape
France 2006 $39.99
“…an outstanding
blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% of the other red grapes
of the appellation. With rich, attractive, earthy notes, and plenty of floral
and spice box characteristics interwoven with dark, ripe red and black fruits,
lavender, and oodles of Provencal typicity, it is full-bodied, fleshy, and
already gorgeous to drink, but promises to evolve for at least a decade or
more.”

SPECIAL
Borsao Campo de Borja Spain 2009
For nearly two decades this delightful red from Spain’s
Campo de Borja growing zone has charmed wine lovers all over the world. It was
one of importer Jorge Ordoñez’ early successes and has never diminished in
popularity since it first made its way to our shores. A blend of Garnacha
(Grenache) and Tempranillo, it is fresh, fragrant and wonderfully vivid, with
an utterly delicious, lip smacking savor. It is also extremely consistent from
one vintage to another and matches well with a wide variety of foods. What more
could you ask from a wine that has remained under $10 dollars a bottle for over
fifteen years? Here’s a review of the current vintage from Wine Advocate:
“The 2009 Borsao
Tinto is composed of 80% Garnacha and 20% Tempranillo fermented and aged in
stainless steel. Also a deep purple-color, it offers up a brooding bouquet of
spicy black cherry and blackberry fruit with a hint of violets in the
background. Sweet, long, and layered, this lengthy effort is an excellent value
for drinking over the next 3 years.”

BEER

Abita SOS Save Our Shore (Abita Springs, LA) $4.99
650 ml
This new release from Abita
represents the brewery’s participation in a charitable relief project in
collaboration with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board. The
Abita brew is a message in a bottle—a distress signal for the troubled waters
of the Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will
donate 75 cents to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and
individuals fighting to survive the disastrous oil spill.
The beer is an unfiltered Weizen
Pils, made with pilsner and wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle
hops and has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor and a pleasant
bitterness and aroma.
Our supplier’s initial allocation
sold out quickly, and though a fresh supply has now arrived, we anticipate that
this beer will move out rapidly. We therefore advise that you make your
purchase sooner rather than later. And here’s to the folks working so hard to
provide some relief for our struggling neighbors to the south!
